Dear ##SubscriberName##,

One of the highlights of this winter has been photographing Great Horned owletes. I was lucky enough to spend time with THREE owletes, watching them grow. I also was witness to an afternoon that was rather dull at first when suddenly a peregrine falcon started to make quite the racket before descending and swooping near the owl nest. The mother owl quickly flew into the nest to protect her babies and I was amazed at how round and big she could make herself look to the falcon. My utube video below shares more details.
Enjoy!
Yours in Nature,
Kristen

Two of the three Great Horned owletes yawning at the same time. These three owletes all reside in the hollow of a tree and at this point in their young lives barely fit in this cavity together anymore. The Great Horned owls are preening, eating and observing other winged creatures as they fly by and over their nest.

A week after photographing the adult owl on her nest, I went back to find a fuzzy chick in the nest sitting alongside Mom. The chick peered out of the nest for just a few shots before nestling back into the comfort of the dark hollow, under his mother's feathers.
This Utube video shows the Great Horned owl adult in the nest protecting the three owletes from a peregrine falcon that had an issue. Please click on the video to watch.
