I was fortunate for the opportunity to make this image of such graceful symmetry. With each bird or group that takes off there is an excitement in my heart that comes with the observation and an opportunity to make an image as unique as each take off.
Morning at the Sandhill crane ponds in Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. The sandhill cranes begin to take off after they free themselves of the ice that freezes to their legs overnight. Can you imagine waking up with your legs frozen to the ground?
All but two sandhill cranes had left the crane ponds at Bosque and they both poetically rested their heads between feathers.
Sunset and Cranes at Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico.
This composited image from Bosque del Apache shows the intense colors of the Bosque sky as the sandhill cranes come in to land in the crane pools for the night. Seeing their legs dangle down and hearing the sound of the cranes is an experience to fall in love with.
American Kestrel, near Bosque del Apache NWR. This handsome kestrel became quite familiar with us over the time we spent near his hunting grounds. He came quite close to hover, quickly beating his wings, as he scanned for prey.
Bosque del Apache, San Antonio, New Mexico. These were the mountains I gazed upon just about every morning that I was at Bosque del Apache NWR. The setting was amazing, especially when the moody clouds came to play.
Snow Geese burst to flight to Dance with the sky. A flurry of orchestrated chaos Surrounds us with it's Serenade. Marrying us into their world, Painting us into the land, Connecting us to the Pulse of Life, Imprinting us with their Wisdom, They expose us to the core of our Soul. Kristen Westlake, inspired by the experience. Written from the memory of this scene near Bosque del Apache, New Mexico, December 17, 2009.
